A Look Back on the Many Achievements of Buck O’Neil

Buck O’Neil kicked off his baseball career barnstorming with fellow Black baseballers before signing with the Memphis Red Sox in 1937. The following year, his contract was sold to the KC Monarchs, where he spent the rest of his playing career. While with the Kansas City Monarchs, Buck was a 3-time All-Star and became a Negro World Series champion in 1942. A few years later, he was named player-manager for the Monarchs, helping guide them to two pennants.

Once the Negro League disbanded around the 1950s, Buck O’Neil became a scout for the Chicago Cubs, signing several big names along the way. Eventually, the Cubs hired him as a coach, making him the first Black member of an AL/NL coaching staff. After this gig, Buck spent the rest of his life telling stories of the Negro Leagues and helped establish the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.
