New MLB Rules Arrive for 2023 Season
In an effort to quicken the pace of the game and make the spectator experience more enjoyable, MLB decided to implement several new rules for the 2023 season. To catch you up to speed, here’s a quick overview of the new MLB rules:
- Pitch Timer: Pitchers will now have 15 or 20 seconds to deliver the pitch, depending on whether the bases are empty. Plus, pitchers get two mound disengagements per batter, while batters get one timeout per plate appearance.
- Shift Restrictions: With the new rules, two infielders must be on each side of second base when the pitch is released, and all four infielders must be within the infield when the pitcher is on rubber. This update should increase batting average and decrease strikeouts.
- Larger Bases: First, second, and third bases are now three inches larger, slightly reducing the distance between bases, which will help keep players safer.
